The QCTO Workplace Essential Skills Programme is a structured, practical skills programme designed to equip learners with the core skills required to function effectively in any workplace environment.

The programme focuses on developing essential workplace knowledge, practical skills, ethical conduct and safe work practices that are applicable across all industries and occupational contexts. Workplace Essential Skills form the foundation for further occupational learning and enable individuals to adapt to changing workplace demands.

This programme supports both employed and unemployed learners, including individuals entering the workplace for the first time or those requiring upskilling to improve their employability and workplace performance.

  • Total Duration: 25 days

  • Mode of Delivery: Classroom‑based, blended learning and workplace‑based facilitation
  • Assessment: Continuous assessment, practical assessments, written assessments and supervised workplace assessments

The primary purpose of the Workplace Essential Skills Programme is to:

  • Prepare learners to operate effectively as employees
  • Enable learners to complete daily workplace tasks and activities responsibly
  • Develop an understanding of employer and employee roles and responsibilities
  • Promote ethical behaviour, workplace values, and professionalism
  • Build a foundation for lifelong learning and career progression
  • Support workplace readiness across all economic sectors

Upon successful completion of the programme, learners will be able to:

  • Identify responsibilities of employers and employees in the workplace
  • Understand and apply work ethics, norms and workplace values
  • Identify and apply safety and legal provisions in the workplace

The Workplace Essential Skills Programme has accessible entry requirements:

  • Minimum NQF Level 1
  • Suitable for both employed and unemployed learners
  • No prior workplace experience required

Assessment is conducted through an integrated approach which includes:

  • Continuous formative assessment
  • Practical assessments covering workplace responsibilities, ethics and safety
  • Written assessments assessing workplace knowledge and understanding
  • Supervised workplace assessments, including teamwork and task performance

Learners who successfully complete the Workplace Essential Skills Programme will receive a QCTO Skills Programme Certificate of Completion, recognised nationally.
