Description

Duration and NQF level

The notional learning time for this 120‑credit NQF Level 3 qualification is guided by the QCTO curriculum and your delivery model (classroom, simulator, and workplace rotation). Providers typically structure the programme over several months to accommodate knowledge, practical and work experience components before EISA.

Accreditation & Compliance

  • Skills Development Provider (SDP) accreditation with QCTO is required to deliver the qualification.
  • Assessment centres must be QCTO‑accredited and designated for this qualification on recommendation of the AQP (TETA).

Graduates will be able to:

  1. Ensure roadworthiness & complete operational documentation before departure.
  2. Operate a bus/coach safely and economically, adhering to routes, time schedules and applicable regulations; manage emergency and non‑standard situations.
  3. Assist passengers with boarding/disembarking and handle luggage professionally and safely.

These outcomes align to the SAQA‑registered purpose/exit intent for the qualification.

Training follows the QCTO occupational model and includes:

  • Knowledge modules – rules of the road, passenger safety, vehicle systems, service standards.
  • Practical skills modules – pre‑trip inspection, defensive and economical driving, incident response, documentation.
  • Work experience – supervised driving and operations within a passenger transport environment.

(Note: Detailed module titles/codes are contained in the official curriculum; delivery mirrors the Knowledge/Practical/Workplace components required by QCTO.)

NQF Level 2 or equivalent (usually Grade 10 or ABET Level 4).

These are education framework requirements. Additional legal and industry requirements still apply (see below).

While not part of the NQF, the following are legally required to practise as a bus driver in South Africa:

  • Appropriate Code C or higher driver’s licence
  • Valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP – Category D or G)
  • Medical fitness as per road traffic legislation

These requirements exist in addition to the NQF Level 3 qualification and are enforced through transport legislation, not the QCTO framework.

  1. Internal assessment: Learners must be found competent in all knowledge, practical and workplace modules and be issued Statements of Results (SoRs) to access the EISA.
  2. External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA): A single national external assessment managed by TETA as AQP and conducted only at QCTO‑accredited assessment centres. Successful candidates are awarded the Occupational Certificate: Bus Driver by QCTO.

  • Nationally recognised occupational certificate on the NQF.
  • Safety, service and efficiency—aligned to industry and regulatory expectations.
  • Clear pathway to employment in municipal, intercity, commuter and tourism services.
